	Melanie Dossey, founder and director, is licensed in the State of Texas as a Certified Nurse-Midwife. Her entire professional career has been committed to the concept of midwifery: entrusting the care of childbearing women to other women who understand the experience of childbearing and its many facets—physical, medical, emotional, spiritual. "The Birth Center exists for healthy women who are having a baby. The guiding principle at Nativiti Women's Health and Birth Center is that pregnancy is not a sickness! Birth is a wonderful and normal life event, to be experienced however and with whomever the mother wishes, within the dictates of safety for all concerned."

	Katherine Grimes CNM is the newest member of Nativiti's professional staff. Katherine began her career as a labor and delivery nurse and has worked in hospitals in Wisconsin, Colorado, California and Texas including UTMB in Galveston. She has over 8 years of high- and low-risk OB experience. Katherine discovered her love of birth center births as a student midwife here at Nativiti. She graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 2003 with her Masters in Nursing as a Midwife. Her desire to empower women to trust themselves and their bodies to do what they are naturally intended to do has been further strengthened by her experiences. She believes women should be actively involved in their healthcare decisions and that in doing so will be empowered for the rest of their lives. Katherine is active in lobbying for legislation in support of women's rights and the promotion of midwifery.
